Single women: What's worse, a man with debt or a man with a record

PHOENIX -

Is having a lot of debt a romance-killer? According to one new survey -- some women think a man with debt is as unattractive as a man with a criminal record.

Creditcards.com found that 70 percent of women said debt is a deal breaker. They said it's as big of a turn off as a criminal record.

So we asked women in downtown Phoenix if they agree.

"I would go with criminal record but it would depend on the debt… 20 thousand dollars [is too much]," says Aubrey Carter.

"It depends on the debt. If its student loans I would say over a $100,000, for me that would be too much," says Jordyn Aggen.

70 percent of women say they wouldn't date a man with unpaid bills, but 57 percent say that any amount of debt is a turnoff. 48 percent of men agree.

"Cause they're going to be expensive, very expensive, expensive taste, probably a shopping problem," says Lance Carter.

Seven out of 10 people say its fine for a partner to insist their loved one change their spending habits -- for example, by taking away their credit cards

"I would say, your spending habits are affecting me and are hurting me and if it's early on in the relationship it's a deal breaker," says Carter.

"If you're going to get married someday, I think its ok to ask her to change her spending habits, although I don't think its ok to ask her to change her spending habits if it's still so new," says Rory Martin.

It's a good thing neither of these two said debt is a deal breaker. Because…

"This is our first date actually!" says Jordyn Aggen.

We're not saying our interview was romantic, but it did give these two some upfront insight.

"I learned that she's pretty fair and open and doesn't judge so I think that's the biggest," says Martin.

"That I think we both don't want or don't like debt and are not ok with irresponsible," says Aggen.

It's great that they're on the same page -- because 16 percent of Americans say that having the same attitude on money is the most important factor in a relationship.
