A hot topic in Austin ISD schools comes to the forefront once again at a meeting Monday night. School board members will decide whether to add more single-sex schools around the area.
The district's plan is to build a new all-boys school with funding from the Moody Foundation as well as transform Pearce and Garcia Middle Schools in east Austin to single-sex schools.
The topic has been under debate for over a year now and parents and students have weighed in on the potential changes at public hearings.
Officials say studies show single-sex schools increase students' performance because boys and girls learn differently and a single-sex school would tailor to that. But many parents and students are opposed to the idea especially worried about the threat of change to their respective middle school.
If the three schools receive the school board approval this evening, they would likely open in the 2014- 2015 school year.
