NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
Tonight is one of those nights were most people don't want to be outside any longer than they have too but hundreds of people found themselves huddled together outside as they waited for a chance to get back into Port Authority.
Definitely not a good night to be stranded out in the freezing cold as firefighters evacuated the Port Authority just before 8:00 p.m. for about a half an hour.
Smoke had filled the terminal due to defective equipment. Despite bundling up, the cold still seems to hit you hard.
New York City hasn't been above or at the freezing mark since Monday, when the high temperature was 32. With temps in the teens tonight, that leftover snow could turn into dangerous black ice.
The high on Saturday was only in the upper 20s but the wind chill makes it feel even colder making it important for people to cover up.
"Always wear something around your neck, cover it up, absolutely.
On Wednesday, forecasters say we could see temps in the 50s but for those out in the cold right now -- next week can't come soon enough.
"It's crazy, it's every day. I don't know how you guys do it here," added one terminal customer.
