Neighbors rescue elderly couple from house fire

Posted: Updated:

Crews responded to a house fire and they arrived to find smoke and flames billowing from a roof.

It started around 3:15 p.m. Monday at a home near 83rd Avenue and Osborn.

Homeowner Fidencio Rameriez, 81, rushed outside after smelling smoke. When he realized what was going on, it was too late. The fire had already spread.

"I got the hose and I tried to put it out," he says.

"This door was open so I look in there, she was right there, she was disoriented, you know, 'what's going on?' … I said your house is on fire," says neighbor Yolanda Delgado.

Delgado lives next door. She helped get Fidencio's wife out. Her son and nephew brought him to safety.

The smoke, according to Delgado and other neighbors, was thick and black.

"It was coming out from both ends, all the way across," says neighbor Carlos Chapa.

The homeowner says a plumber was working in the attic earlier Monday, repairing some pipes that had been damaged during last week's freeze.

"This morning they soldered that line that goes into there, see, for the water," says Fidencio, about the pipes in the attic.

"The fire appears to be isolated to the attic area," says Phoenix Fire Capt. Tony Mure. "They do have property damage done, but that house is definitely rebuildable and within a short time they will be able to be living in their home."

Phoenix Fire Captain Tony Mure says investigators are working to determine the exact cause and origin of the blaze.

The house is pretty severely damaged as a result. But husband and wife were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but will be ok.
