Hundreds Of Thousands To Gather For Inauguration Festivities

Posted: Updated:

As deeply divided as the nation's capital is, Monday is a day when Washington, D.C., puts politics aside to honor the office of the presidency.

Inaugural festivities will be under way in the city from dawn to dusk as the president celebrates the start of his next four years in office.

The president and vice president were both officially sworn in to their second term Sunday in small, private ceremonies.

But speaking to the nation Sunday night, the president says he's eager to take the oath again today on a much larger stage.

Sunday's ceremonies were held to comply with the constitutional requirement that the oath be taken on Jan. 20. But traditionally the big public party isn't thrown on a Sunday.

So, today is the chance for a crowd of as many as 700,000 to gather on the mall to celebrate the president as he gears up for the next four years.

The president will be sworn in today with bibles used by two historical icons, President Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.

Then, Obama will deliver an inaugural address the White House says will acknowledge the current partisan divide and strike a hopeful tone.
