Arizona orange growers fearful of losing crop

MESA, Ariz. -

The freezing temps are frustrating enough for homeowners who lose plants. Imagine having an entire orange grove at risk. That's the grim reality for some farmers in the valley.

Row after row of oranges could be lost when all is said and done.

They're running water, hoping the steam will raise temps under the trees by just a few degrees. But just a few hours of freezing temps is enough to kill them all.

We talked to one worker today who said this could've been one of the best seasons in decades.

"The saddest thing about this, is up until this little cold spell, the oranges were in the most perfect shape I've ever seen in 21 years. They were absolutely beautiful, so then to get this, that's like getting attacked by the devil… this is really sad," said J.D. Cronk, Citrus Heights Farms.

In one orange, farmers found ice crystals had formed. Growers say they won't know the full extent of the damage until the oranges thaw.
