Austin Police spent the afternoon chasing down a suspect, who robbed an armored vehicle at Capitol Plaza in northeast Austin.
"The suspect produced a handgun, disarmed the armored car driver and when the clerk started screaming seeing that there was a robbery going on the suspect shot several shots inside of the location and ordered the clerk to shut up," Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said.
Police say the suspect fled the scene with a money bag from the armored vehicle leading Austin police officers on a chase that ended behind the Springdale Shopping Center just off 183.
"The suspect exited the vehicle and fired several rounds at the Austin police officers that were attempting to stop him," Acevedo said.
Bystanders were in shock after one of the officers was shot in the leg.
"That's just crazy. So like I'm like really devastated about it right now. You know I came back from San Antonio. This is my hometown, to see this go on it's like what the hell is going on," a bystander said.
"Our officer appears to be in stable condition and he will recover fully from his injuries," Acevedo said.
But the suspect escaped again and was then able to carjack a driver in the area.
"He forced the victim in that car at gun point to drive away from this area," Acevedo said.
Police caught up to the suspect, as he was armed with a semi-automatic pistol, at this apartment in the 9400 block of highway 290, just a few miles away. He was taken into custody without incident.
