Art installation memorializes Newtown massacre victims

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Each illuminated angel in a work of art by Staten Island's Scott LoBaido represents a child killed in the Newtown, Conn., tragedy. The artist calls this piece from one grieving community to another.

It took seven days to make 7,000 lights into a display that inspires just about everyone who looks at it.

The artwork can now be seen on the front lawn of Staten Island's St. Teresa's School.

Lobaido purposely chose Superstorm Sandy-ravaged Staten Island to unveil his piece. Each angel is handmade from lights, chicken wire, aluminum foil, and tape.

Lobaido said he wanted to portray the students as they should always be remembered: as little happy playful angels who brought joy into the lives of everyone they met.

The display will be here until next week.

He doesn't know where the piece will head next. He plans on adding sculptures representing six teachers also killed that day.
