Pig on the loose gives cops the runaround

A FOX 10 Exclusive

PHOENIX - A pig led police on a chase through a south Phoenix neighborhood Thursday. And this big fellow wasn't going to go down without a fight.

The pig escaped in a neighborhood near 19th Avenue and Roeser. Police followed the animal by car and on foot, even trying to round him up with a lasso. And it was all caught on tape.

This pig really gave officers a run for their money today, proving to be very elusive as they tried to pin down this porker.

It's a hot pursuit like we've never seen before.

Police scanner: "Hey Mike, do you think you can go on the eastside and block the alley, he outsmarted us and already went out the gate…"

The big pig strolled down an alley as police officers tried to figure out how to keep it from running into traffic.

"It gave us the slip several times -- but finally we were able to get it into a backyard over here. And it's safe and we're just waiting for the livestock board to come pick it up," says Phoenix Police Sgt. Ken Mentzer.

Some eyewitnesses in the neighborhood didn't feel like talking to FOX 10 about the situation. But Dave Raitter saw it all.

"Oh, alley full of cops and cop cars -- and one with a lasso and trying to rope 'em – but, pig was a little too fast for 'em," says Raitter.

Raitter even helped bring the chase to an end.

"Opened up my gate and welcomed him in. And I guess the pig got tired of running the police all over the alley so he came into my yard. I shut the gate -- and he was mine."

"It was a pretty good size pig -- and it was a little bit too much for us to handle," says Sgt. Ken Mentzer.

"Yeah he'd make a lot of pork chops," laughs Raitter.

The Department of Agriculture, helped by a neighborhood dog, loaded the pig into a trailer, bringing this swine saga to an end.

"Bye bye piggy!"

FOX 10 photojournalist Rick Davis captured this unique pursuit on tape. We're still not sure where this pig came from, so if you're missing one, call the Department of Agriculture.
