Police say a man who punched a convenience store clerk several times during a failed attempt to rob him also had a hard time trying to leave.

On New Year's Eve at 3:15 a.m., the suspect entered the 7-Eleven on the 700 block of Ogontz Avenue and walked behind the counter. Police said he assaulted the employee and tried several times to take money from the cash register.

When the man attempted to flee, he tried a locked door, police said.

Surveillance video from the store then shows him taking a coffee machine, smashing a glass door with it and running away.

Police described the suspect as a black male, 20- to 25-years-old, with a medium build, wearing a dark-gray hooded jacket with a gray hooded sweatshirt underneath, blue jeans, black sneakers and a dark mask over the lower portion of his face.

Police said if you see this man, do not approach him. Call 911 immediately.

To submit a tip via telephone, dial 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP or 773847.
