36-year-old Officer Peter Bennett was shot six times Sunday night trying to take down a suspect, and we're told his surgery went well on Monday.

"The officer is in tremendous spirits, I visited with him personally last night, so did the mayor. He was in very good spirits," said Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia.

Around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, the officer tried to make a "subject stop" on a man acting suspiciously in the area of Georgia and 21st Avenues. The suspect was on a bike, wearing dark clothes and a backpack.

During the stop, the suspect got off the bike and began to remove the backpack, against the commands of Officer Bennett. He then fled on foot eastbound, and Officer Bennett followed.

The suspect then fell to the ground, pulled out a handgun from his clothing, and began to fire multiple shots at Officer Bennett. Bennett then returned fire, and both were wounded, according to Phoenix Police.

Other officers responded to the area after the officer made a distress call. Police estimate about 80 patrol cars came to the area in response to the call.

After searching for the suspect for about an hour, SWAT officers found the shooting suspect hiding in a shed in the back yard of a nearby home. The suspect continued to be combative and uncooperative and was injured by a police K-9 while he was being apprehended.

"I can tell you that our officer is talking. He was speaking with some of our fellow officers but I will tell you that the nature of the injuries are quite serious," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.

The suspect was transported to a hospital. He sustained gunshot wounds to both hands as well as injuries from the canine. When he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into jail on 1 count of attempted murder of an officer and 1 count of misconduct involving weapons.

Officer Bennett was shot six times -- receiving wounds to the right side of his face, his right hip, and his arm. Several rounds struck his ballistic vest, which otherwise would've hit him in the chest and may have killed him.

The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Brandon McCabe. He just got out of prison for felony burglary.

Neighbors tell us the area is high crime, and police recently increased patrols after a rash of home burglaries.

"Every night, every day there's something happening in the neighborhood... we just had a home invasion down the street, on the same day we had a robbery on my block," said neighbor Luz Acosta.

Chief Garcia says Bennett had to call his family from the hospital to tell them what happened.

"That was pretty hard to sit there and watch one of my officers talking to his father and reassuring him that he was going to be fine."

Bennett is a 4-and-a-half year veteran of the force.
