LOCKPORT, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities have charged a western New York man with attempted murder after police say he tried to kill his girlfriend's 7-year-old daughter.

Police in Lockport say when they responded to a 911 call Monday afternoon they found 28-year-old David Alfonso covered in blood at an intersection. Officials say officers had to use a Taser when he became combative.

Police were approached at the intersection by a 27-year-old woman who told officers that Alfonso had attacked her daughter at their home. The girl was found at her grandmother's house in Lockport and was taken to a Buffalo hospital for treatment. She's reported in stable condition.

Alfonso is being held in the Niagara County Jail on charges of attempted murder, strangulation and assault. He pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday.
