NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A dump truck hit and killed an 11-year-old boy in a crosswalk in Jackson Heights, Queens, Friday morning, police said.

The owner of a convenience store at the intersection of 80th Street and Northern Boulevard said the boy bought Pop Tarts and a Sprite in the store, put on his green backpack, walked outside where he was mowed down by the truck.

The boy, later identified as Miguel Torres, of Queens, died at the scene, police said.

The white truck, which was towing a green-colored generator, left the scene and headed west on Northern Boulevard, police said.

Detectives are investigating this as a hit-and-run incident, the third fatal one in Queens just this week.
