City expects large crowd for New Year’s Eve celebration

Posted: Updated:

In less than a week Auditorium Shores will host an all-out New Year's Eve celebration. The family friendly event begins at 5 p.m. Monday evening until fireworks close out the show at 10 p.m.

But in between, several stages will be set up with everything from cultural arts to live music. This year will be the first time the city will team up with South by Southwest, so expect film screenings to be a part of the event. This non-alcohol event will be free to everyone, but you may want to plan ahead. Roads will be closing beginning at 8 a.m. on the Dec. 31.

Austin Police will be out in full force on New Year's Eve.

"At one or two in the morning a lot of people are leaving parties, a lot of people are leaving bars and unfortunately it gets very busy," said APD Chief Art Acevedo.

A 'No Refusal' initiative will begin Monday at 5pm until Tuesday at 5a.m. That means DWI units will have a search warrants to draw blood if a suspected drunk driver refuses a breath test.

"Make good choices, don't ruin your New Year's by ending up in jail or worse in the hospital or the morgue," said Acevedo.

To encourage safe choices Capitol Metro is joining in the effort. All of their services starting at 6 p.m. will be free to the public until 3 a.m. New Year's Day.
