This time last week, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo officially closed the murder case of 29-year-old Esme Barrera. She was killed last New Year's Day and now we know how.
According to the Travis County Medical Examiner's autopsy report, Barrera was stabbed multiple times. She also suffered a number of other cuts.
The report indicates it was those wounds that lead to her death. Neck compression, it states, may have also been a contributing factor.
Police say 25-year-old James Loren Brown Jr. committed the murder. He was also linked to two other attacks on women before and after Barrera was found dead.
Police later connected Brown to multiple assaults on women during the summer of 2011.
Brown committed suicide before police could make an arrest.
