Texas State mariachi band earns national acclaim

The mariachi group Nueva Generacion at Texas State University has been recognized as being one of the best in the country after placing first at a national competition.

The group won first place at the prestigious Mariachi Vargas competition last month.

Junior Karen Zavala was also named best mariachi vocalist in the United States.

"Having to hear my name after they announced best in show, best in the US, I just froze for a bit and cried," Zavala said. "It was something I've been going for for three years."

Texas State student Nelson Ruiz also placed third in the best vocalist competition. While he is not pursuing a career in music, he does say that this is his passion.

"I don't want to stop doing this," Ruiz said. "I was a music major first, then I switched to criminal justice, but I'm never going to stop performing."

Zavala said she cannot wait to see what is next for her future.

"I'm just 21, I'm nowhere near the best, I will get there I know it, and I believe in myself, but now it's just a huge leap to get me where I want to be," Zavala said.
