State officials are asking drivers to be extra careful during holiday travel this year. There are currently more mils of construction on I-35 than at any other time in state history.
That is part of the reason that the Department of Public Safety will have extra troopers patrolling the roadways this holiday season.
AAA predicts that 7.7 million Texans will be on the road between December 22 and January 1. That represents at 2% increase from last year.
Sergeant Jason Reyes of the Department of Public Safety said distractions on the roadway remain one of the main dangers for drivers.
"People are still using their cell phones," Reyes said. "We want people to put those distractions away, watch your speed, be courteous, leave early, plan ahead."
"Each and every day there are thousands of motorists coming up and down Interstate 35," said John Barton of the Texas Department of Transportation. "During the holiday season, there will be even more. And unfortunately there are times when crashes occur and lives are lost."
