The trail of lights has been on hiatus for two years. There were some issues with funding, but thanks many local corporations the lights are coming back on and this year you may notice a few differences.
To save energy the lights are now l-e-d lights. There's more than a million total throughout the entire trail.
There will now be food trailers on site, so that patrons don't have to leave to get a bite to eat and there is also going to be a trail of lights market, where local vendors will sell holiday items.
Organizers tell us this was truly a community effort to bring back the trail this year.
"We got serious in February of last year. We had to go through getting council to approve it and so there was a lot of work that went into getting the agreement together with the city to do it and then we hit the road and I would say 6 months of really focused work on this," said Paul Carroza, an organizer of Trail of Lights.
"It's a lot better now. A lot more lights and I like that they started with the 5k and the kids run. That's kind of a nice Austin way to start something like this," Carol Kim, a patron.
The trail opens Sunday evening and runs through December 23rd. It is free and open to the public.
There is limited parking, so organizers are urging participants to take shuttles. For more information on that go to austintrailoflights.Org.
