City Council members met for one last time before the year is over and despite some opposition they approved the sale of alcohol at the Wheatsville Co-op.
The new store is just 100 feet from the Ann Richards School for Young Women.
Council members had received letters of opposition from Austin ISD saying selling alcohol near any school is not conducive to a safe and positive learning environment.
Those who support the alcohol waiver say Wheatsville has proved they're a responsible beer and wine merchant at their current location near the UT campus.
Wheatsville Co-op will be selling only carry-out beer and wine. The store is scheduled to open next year.
