One Austin-based company helped give the Austin Police Department's struggling Operation Blue Santa program a big boost on Wednesday.
Whale Shark Media donated $15,000 worth of products that would go towards funding the program, and helping the APD ensure that needy children in the area would have a merry Christmas.
Two APD officers, in a race against time, ran through the Costco in south Austin and grabbed as much as they could fit into their shopping carts. They picked up as many toys as they could that would benefit the children of the more than five thousand families who will receive a gift from Blue Santa this year.
Some of the big-ticket items grabbed by the officers will be auctioned off, and those funds will be used to buy more toys. Blue Santa spokesman Joe Munoz told FOX 7 that the donation from Whale Shark Media and the shopping spree will make a big difference this Christmas for many families.
"Blue Santa was already in a predicament where we were starting to go into our reserves, but we know this community is great and we know people here care about what we do," said Munoz.
This year, Operation Blue Santa is also stepping up to fill the role left by the criminal misconduct investigation into the Christmas Bureau. Blue Santa is still collecting toys and donations, and will begin delivering gifts to families on December 15th.
