A former Austin Parks and Recreation Department employee was arrested Friday and charged with sexual assault of a teenage boy.
According an arrest affidavit, the 30 year-old Juan Garza Jr. called police and confessed to sexual contact with a child.
The two stories given to investigators differ slightly, but both the 14 year-old teenage boy and Garza told police they met while Garza was working at the Dove Springs Recreation Center a year ago.
Garza's been a city employee since 2002 and working at rec centers in town since 2003. He passed several background checks during that time.
Garza was fired Friday for allegedly committing sexual assault against the 14 year-old.
The two started communicating via social networking websites a month ago.
"If you're going to give your kids cellphones that have access to the social media, that's one of the bad things about that, is you can't monitor that as easily, but it's important for parents to monitor social media and maybe even ‘friend' their kids unknowingly so they can watch what's going on," Austin Police Chief, Art Acevedo said.
Counselors with APD child abuse unit will be available at the Dove Springs Rec Center this weekend during operating hours.
Police say Garza also worked at the Camacho Recreation Center and Dittmar Recreation Center, but say they have no reason to believe there are any other victims.
