Bastrop County Sheriff's deputies are looking for a man they say dragged his horse for nearly 100 yards behind a truck.
Deputies found the horse very badly injured on November 10.
Investigators went to the property after witnesses reported seeing the horse's owner, 43-year-old Mariano Resendiz Villafuerta, dragging the animal by the hitch of his pickup truck.
Seargent Ric Cole with the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office said Villafuerta was upset the horse misbehaved and ran away.
According to court documents he not only dragged the animal, but also kicked it while it was on the ground bleeding.
"He's got road rash on his complete left side, his knees, he's got skid marks on his knees, he's got a cut above his eye and his mouth," said Darla Cherry. She is caring for him now.
"I cannot imagine how anybody could do this to a horse," Cherry said. "Just the thought of how could somebody do this to a living creature is beyond me."
His wounds, Darla says, are slowly healing at her Meadow Haven Horse Rescue in Nixon, near Seguine. He is there with 85 other rescued horses.
"He's an absolutely beautiful horse," she said, "His disposition is remarkable, he is such a sweetheart, he lets us wash him and he's so laid back. I just can't imagine how someone got mad at him."
Villafuerta has been charged with animal cruelty. It has been filed as a state jail felony due to the seriousness of the abuse. Bastrop County Sheriff's deputies are asking for anybody who knows where he is to notify authorities.
