There are many events taking place now that the holidays are underway. This weekend, Austinites participated in Operation Green Santa and the Zilker Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony.
Operation Green Santa is a toy drive aimed at benefiting military parents and their children. This year, the organization, Military Moms of Texas, has received more than 1,000 donations and plans to serve more than 150 families through the annual drive.
"My heart bleeds for our military and if we don't take care of them who will," said Kelly Appice, Director of Military Moms of Texas.
Meanwhile, Sunday evening, more than 2500 people gathered in Zilker Park to watch the lighting of the Zilker Holiday Tree. This is the 46th year that the City of Austin has lit the tree, which stands 55' tall and has more than 3500 multi-color lights.
The Zilker Holiday Tree will be lit December 2 through December 31, 2012, from 6 pm until midnight nightly.
