NYC hate crimes unit probing attack on 70-year-old

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - New York City police are investigating an attack on a 70-year-old man who says his assailants asked whether he was Muslim or Hindu.

Ali Akmal was hospitalized in stable condition with facial cuts and bruises Friday, six days after the attack near his home in the Corona section of Queens.

Police are looking for two men seen on surveillance footage running from the scene. They're thought to be in their late teens or early 20s.

Akmal told police the men asked him whether he was Muslim or Hindu and started beating him. Akmal is Muslim. Hate Crimes unit detectives are investigating.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and other council members call the incident a "hateful act of intolerance."

Anyone with information is asked to call 800-577-TIPS.
