Man uses fake credit cards to purchase $5K in fuel

Posted: Updated:

Austin Police have charged a man they say purchased about thousands of dollars in fuel from multiple gas stations using fraudulent credit cards.

According to police, between Oct. 28 and Nov. 14, 37-year-old Raidel Gonzalez purchased $5,000 in diesel fuel from multiple Sam's Clubs in the Austin area. Gonzalez pumped the fuel into an external fuel tank installed into the bed of a red Ford F-150 pick-up.

Police say he would typically make three to four $100 fuel purchases back-to-back using cloned credit cards. The purchases associated with Gonzales were utilized with 16 different credit card account numbers. Police believe Gonzalez cloned the credit cards after that data was stolen through the use of a hand-held skimmer.

Gonzalez has been charged with fraudulent use of identifying information and credit card abuse.
