Scottsdale dentist treats special needs patients

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

One in 88 children are diagnosed with autism and it's a staggering statistic.

For those parents, they know day to day life isn't always easy.  Going to a doctor or dentist can be a huge obstacle, so what's the solution?

There's a local dentist that's an expert when it comes to special needs patients.

No one likes going to the dentist, but it's just one of those things you have to do.  But for children like 10-year-old Noah, it's especially difficult.

He's autistic and parents of special needs children know things that may seem simple like this can be a challenge.

"I think the best way for parents just starting out in this process really just need to plan ahead and if that's making books, talking with your child, bringing them to dentist's office and showing them around first, that would be my best advice," said Noah's mother, Barbara Forman.

Dr. Lee Weinstein at Dental Associates for Kids Only in Scottsdale has a large percentage of patients that are special needs and he knows what it takes to get them in his chair.

"We have plenty of special needs kids that just make it to the waiting room and then slowly bring them back to back and then three appointments for chair and two more appointments to and 20 more appointments we will eventually get there," he said.

Noah was diagnosed at 18 months and with constant help, he's made huge strides.

"I go to Cracker Jax, Gameworks..Chuckee Cheeses," he said.  "I play basketball, baseball..I won those trophies."

"He's an absolute different child, he enjoys coming, he doesn't give me a problem, sits in chair, he gets his teeth cleaned," said Barbara.

To help with the whole process, this Scottsdale dental office has prizes, video games -- but it's really about the doctor.

"You just have to have that personality.  You have to have desire to do it and not everyone has desire to do it and willingness to do it," said Weinstein.  "It's fun to see someone like Noah who wouldn't get in chair to begin with and now gets in chair and is part of our life."
