Superstorm Sandy

The Pizza Patrol

MYFOXNY.COM -

Vanessa McHugh of Queens is hard at work bringing some comfort -- hot slices of pizza -- to those in need.

It all started just after Hurricane Sandy. Vanessa and her kids wanted to help so they asked their local pizza place, Sal's Pizza on Jamaica Avenue, if they could purchase pies at half price to bring to neighborhoods hit hardest by the storm.

Her Facebook friends saw what she was doing and started chipping in. Vanessa and her family have been delivering pizzas since.

"I said whoever wants to donate, I'll open up my PayPal account, you can donate. Within an hour, we had $1,200," she said.

In RockawayS, the McHughs are offering up some hot pizza to anyone who wants a hot meal.

In the past few weeks they've served up over 2,500 slices.

"To have endured the physical and emotional devastation that these people have gone through," she said. "There's something neighborly about a slice of pizza."

With more than $4,000 raised, Vanessa said she is not looking for any more donations. Instead she is hoping anyone inspired by her story will start a pizza patrol of their own to help those in need.
