Widespread heartbreak over Hostess' end

PHOENIX -

Some financial experts believe gold is a good investment, but what about golden snack cakes? More than 2,000 people have posted Twinkies on eBay, trying to get rich off the now out-of-production classic snacks.

Sadly, the creme filled golden snack cake will not live on.

"You don't know what you've got until it's gone, I think this is clearly a conspiracy," says Mike Loehrke.

"Where am I going to get my ding dongs I love ding dongs," says Steve Grumkoski.

Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy this year and Friday, due to a baker's union strike, the company closed down altogether. That means no Ho Ho's, Zingers, Suzy Q's, Twinkies, Cupcakes, Ding Dongs, and Fruit Pies.

That's why customers at grocery stores and at the Hostess Bakery outlets in the valley cleared the shelves today, hauling out boxes of the sweet treats.

The Twinkie itself has been around for more than 80 years and there's something about that spongy golden goodness that brings back memories of childhood.

"The cake and the inside the creamy inside, it's great," says Holly Dodds.

"Part of the daily lunch that I used to take to school," says Jose Sepulveda.

The brand could make a comeback under new ownership, so snack food fans can hope for a future fix. Good luck finding any Twinkies in the short term, though.

"I see the rack of Twinkies and it's all that I can do to hold myself back from buying a thing of Twinkies or Cupcakes and eating them right there on the spot," says Loehrke.
