Will BrewerCare be created for Arizona?

Posted: Updated:

The Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as "ObamaCare," is coming in 2014.

The Supreme Court gave it the green light and the President was re-elected, so ObamaCare is not going away.

The question is, who is going to run it in Arizona?  The state or the feds?

Governor Jan Brewer has until mid-December to decide -- she disclosed the postponement late Thursday.

ObamaCare is based on RomneyCare -- Massachusetts' health care plan signed into law in 2006 by then-Governor Mitt Romney.

Everyone is covered and the state runs it.  You get online, enter your information and buy your health insurance.  It's kind of like using Travelocity or Expedia to buy an airline ticket.

Will Gov. Brewer try to create something like this in Arizona?

The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and industry hopes so.

"The best path forward is for the state of Arizona to create its own health insurance exchange..that path gives us more flexibility to determine what choices are available to consumers as well as small businesses," said Suzanne Kinney.

Massachusetts, the ObamaCare pioneer, has an easy to navigate web site complete with a cartoon to explain how it works.

The Chamber of Commerce says it Arizona does what Massachusetts did, there will be more choices and less red tape than the feds.

"It is a risk," said Kinney.  "Do we want to let the feds decide which insurance policies can be on the exchange or do we want to make that decision ourselves?"

So is the state of Arizona going to run this healthcare exchange or just let the feds do it?  We went to the state capitol to find out.

No comment from the Governor.  She's out of town in Las Vegas for the Republican Governors Association.

Many states are going to run their own plans.  Utah, for example, has a plan.  Other states, such as Texas, don't want any part of running a plan under the Affordable Care Act.  They'll just let the feds run it for them.
