Recorder's Office webcam shows no one counting ballots

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of thousands of ballots in Arizona still haven't been counted, and the deadline is Friday for them to be included in the final results.

Most of those uncounted ballots are in Maricopa County, and we've been told ballot counters are working into the night in order to meet that deadline. But you wouldn't know it from the county's own live web cam.

It looked almost empty Wednesday afternoon and it didn't change much throughout the day. No flurry of activity -- at most there were two people counting ballots -- and all those other ballot machines sitting silent.

The recorder's office set up this camera so people could be assured that their ballots were being counted, but this doesn't seem reassuring at all.

The county recorder's office tells us what you see on the web camera is just a small fraction of what's going on here. They say there are hundreds of people here in other rooms processing ballots.

But when we tried to go inside to see all of those workers, we were told no. So we started recording what was on their web cameras just after 3:00 p.m.

You can see three people, one delivering what appeared to be ballots to a man at a machine, another man seated at a table, likely a political party observer.

About 3:40 p.m., workers loaded a box on a cart and hauled it away. 45 minutes go by and not much changes. 4:45, you see people leaving. About 4:58 the room is empty. 40 minutes later, still empty.

When we went to the recorder's office to try and find out what was going on: "No interviews, nothing."

A spokesperson stopped us before we could even get to the door and informed us our cameras are not allowed inside.

"Are there only two people counting ballots?" we asked.

"Right now there might be, we had all the machines tabulating earlier. That's why the results are on the page now."

"How many people are counting on a regular basis?"

"I don't know."

We were able to get in touch with Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell over the phone, who told us even though you only see a couple of people here, there are at least 200 people in other rooms without cameras processing ballots.

But again, we weren't allowed to see them. So even though this might give the impression of a lack of urgency…

"That is not the case absolutely not, we will tabulate as much as we have processed to go into that room," says Helen Purcell, Maricopa County Recorder.

Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett joined us live to clear up some of this confusion. Press play.
