A 3-year-old child was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after being found in a backyard pool.
It happened at a home near 79th Ave and Union Hills, where the child's grandparents live. The girl's grandfather was watching her outside in the backyard and apparently went inside for just a minute, according to Glendale Fire.
When he returned outside, he saw that the girl had fallen into the pool.
The little girl was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead about 4 p.m. The pool did not have a fence.
Neighbors say the family has lived here for about 9 years and the grandfather is a pastor.
"I've seen her out, yeah she's a little doll, curly hair, she's just a little doll," said neighbor Judy Janosik.
Vikki Teeman was visiting the neighborhood when she heard the news. Many of her relatives are firefighters, and she says calls like these are very painful.
"I was devastated, just devastated... it's a child, anything that happens to anybody is horrific, when a child is in involved it's so much more heart wrenching," she says.
Glendale Police are investigating, but at this point it appears to have been just a terrible accident.
