On Friday AISD students honored veterans with Take a Vet to School Day.
Local veterans gathered at Metz Elementary School for the program which connects kids with veterans in their community.
Throughout the morning veterans shared their experiences with students and visited their classrooms.
Senator John Cornyn addressed the students and veterans. He said the event teaches students the value of what veterans have done for our country.
"These young children, pre-k through 5th grade, are learning at a very early age that getting an education is about more than reading, writing and arithmetic," Cornyn said. "It's about learning what it means to be an American and learning that all of us have a responsibility not just to ourselves, but to a cause bigger than ourselves."
"This is overwhelming that there's a school that rolls out the red carpet like this for their veterans and they spend week getting all the decorations and bring the veterans in and really treat them like heroes," said veteran James Crabtree. "Never seen a school do anything like that so it's really an honor."
This was the sixth annual Take a Vet to School day at Metz Elementary.
