Police need your help to find a man who tried to rape a 19-year-old Arizona State University student in her apartment near Rural and University -- just a few blocks from Sun Devil Stadium around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Tempe police detectives went door to door in a neighborhood not far from the ASU campus and searched the area for clues.
"We don't know how he came into the house, but he came in, he attempted to sexually assault this young lady..she was very strong willed and did an excellent job of fighting back. She prevented herself from being a rape victim," said Sgt. Michael Pooley of the ASU police.
The victim was in her apartment sleeping when she woke to find the man in her room.
Students at ASU credited the young woman for fighting back.
"I would have froze up at first..I wouldn't have though -- fight someone off me at first. She was smart at that point," said ASU senior Samantha Robinson.
Tempe police have stepped up patrols in the area and are hoping people get a close look at the suspect's sketch.
"It concerns me a lot -- and it makes me feel like I have to find ways to protect myself," added Robinson.
ASU junior Adria Gutierrez says, "It definitely worries me -- just because..like anything can happen.. I've had friends that have been assaulted, so it's kinda like don't go out, don't be in dark areas, be aware of your surroundings."
"Know that he did a horrific crime to a young lady that lives here in Tempe -- and we need to get him off the street," said Pooley.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his late 40s or early 50s, 5'5" tall, chubby build. He was wearing a red T-shirt with black writing and long shorts that covered his knees.
