TEMPE, Ariz. -

The 2012 Walk to Cure Diabetes Celebrating Ron Santo brought over 20,000 walkers to Tempe Town Lake on Saturday morning.

The 5K walk aimed to raise awareness and help combat type 1 diabetes, which affects children and adults.

Superstorm Sandy had a big impact on JDRF Walk.

The storm disrupted communication with the computer servers to the organization's home base in New York.

But organizers persevered, keeping their goal of raising over $1.2 million in mind.

The walk is very special to FOX 10's Ron Hoon, who led stretches with other FOX 10 personalities before it started.

FOX 10's Gayle Jansen talks to some of her co-workers about why they participate each year.
