PEORIA, Ariz. -
The Peoria Police Department is reminding trick-or-treaters to beware of visiting registered sex offenders this Halloween.
While many kids go door-to-door to get candy, they may not know who lives behind the door they're knocking on.
Detectives are now visiting the homes of Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders, making sure they are obeying the terms of their parole.
Sex offenders cannot participate in Halloween activities involving children of any age. That means their home can't have any decorations, they must keep their outer lights off to discourage visitors, and are prohibited from attending gatherings where children might be present. They are also prohibited from drinking or possessing alcohol.
Parents and chaperones are also asked to visit CrimeReports.com to see where sex offenders in your area live.
Police also ask that parents teach their kids about Halloween safety.
