Wild hogs create hazard on new toll road

Posted: Updated:

There's a danger on State Highway 130 that is just coming to light as the first cars travel down the new toll road. Wild hogs are becoming a hazard on America's fastest highway.

"We are in a rural area," said Chief Michael Lummus, Lockhart Police Department.

The newly extended portion of State Highway 130 is less than a week old and while drivers get accustomed to an 85 mph speed limit, they might also have to get used to something else.

"We know that we have a large population of feral hogs. That's evident by the fact that county has a bounty on them," said Lummus.

In the day time, the hogs are easier to see, but at night it's a much different story.

"You don't see them. It's just right there in your face immediately. There's very little time to react, especially at 85 mph," Lummus said.

Lockhart police say there have already been at least three reported accidents on SH 130 involving wild hogs, since the newly constructed toll way opened Wednesday, and suggest drivers use extra caution after sunset.

"It might be a good idea to drive a little slower even though it says you can drive 85," Lummus said.

Law enforcement will patrol the highway, which they hope will keep drivers near the speed limit, but that still won't keep the hogs off the roads.

"If you're traveling 85 miles an hour and hit some of these hogs that are 200 pounds and plus you're more than likely going to deploy your airbags in your face at 85 mph. It's a whole different degree of difficulty. Motorcycles, they almost have no chance. If they miss them the evasive action may get them," said Lummus.
