There are new developments surrounding a rape suspect and the police received a shocking phone call Thursday night when he decided to turn himself in -- now we're learning more about him.
Ryan Joseph Festa has been in trouble with the law many times in the past, but the charges he's facing this time are by far the most severe.
A composite sketch of the man suspected of raping two Scottsdale women made everyone in that city feel a little uneasy, but it made another man feel the need to turn himself in and now Festa is behind bars.
With the composite sketch and Festa's mug shot, you'll note the similarity between the two.
Police believe he targeted women in floor-level apartments with the back doors cracked open.
Scottsdale residents are relieved, but reminded there are some bad guys out there.
"I'm always careful when I walk. I walk with my keys in my hand, you know, especially at night. Not so much during the day, but especially at night," said Lauren Kraushaar.
Stephen Avalos adds, "It's kind of crazy, it's come to that, you know, people are doing that. It's kind of scary when you think you're safe in your own house when you've got people like that, but it's good to hear he's off the streets."
Festa is no stranger to the 4th Avenue Jail. He's been booked several times. Apparently, he had quite the rap sheet as a minor and some of that behavior seems to have carried over into his adult years.
Several charges show up in his criminal record, including drug possession, as well as shoplifting and even assault charges that were ultimately dropped, but he's never been accused of crimes of a sexual nature until now.
One question that has come into play in past prosecutions of Festa has been his mental competency. He's undergone court ordered psychiatric evaluations before, but we don't know whether or not his mental state will have any bearing on the felony charges he's facing.
