Friends and family call Jose Luis Ruiz one of the good guys. He was shot and killed over the weekend while working at a mobile phone store.
His family is speaking out for the first time, hoping there's someone out there who will come forward and help police find the killer.
The Ruiz family is devastated. His sister and father say that Jose was the perfect brother and son.
"I'm sure that wherever he is, he is with us, and he is still guiding us and watching out for us. He was just perfect, there is no negative word I could say about him," says older sister Gabriella.
The Ruiz family found out about the murder when they showed up to the Boost Mobile store Saturday night. Jose hadn't been answering his phone.
"We had so many memories together. Nothing will ever be the same without him."
Jose was 18 and had just graduated in May. He was working 2 jobs and was saving up to buy his first car. In high school he was a member of the Junior ROTC and wanted to become a policeman.
"He was one of the best kids you could ever hope for, what you want out of a son, or for sure for me out of a cadet or high school student. It's like, give me 200 more like that," says Lt. Col. Jackson MacDonald, JROTC.
"This was a young man, 18 years of age, that had a tremendous future ahead of him. It really touches our heart, and we want to bring closure to the family," says Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia.
The motive appears to have been robbery. No arrests have been made. Anything with information is asked to call Silent Witness.
An account has been set up by the family to help with funeral costs: Chase Bank, in the name of Maria Ruiz, account #951197599
