Police say a Phoenix mom had been smoking marijuana when her 1-year-old baby fell from a 2nd story balcony.
Phoenix Police officers responded to a home near 57th Ave and Thomas on Monday. City workers working on a sidewalk reported seeing a child fall from the 2nd story of an apartment.
The workers had tried to convince Elizabeth Montijo, the child's mother, to call 911, but she refused to make any calls, saying a friend was coming to take the baby to the hospital, according to court documents.
The child apparently crawled out to the balcony through a sliding glass door that had been left open, falling 10 to 12 feet.
Phoenix Fire transported the baby to the hospital and found no major injuries.
Officers entered the apartment and noticed an odor of marijuana. Police also observed open bottles of alcohol and bottles of prescription pills on the kitchen table.
Montijo allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day. She surrendered a small bag of marijuana that she had hidden.
The 23-year-old was booked into jail for possession of marijuana and child abuse.
