Arizona voters to decide fate of new sales tax hike

Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona voters two years ago overwhelmingly approved a temporary sales tax increase, but the political landscape is significantly different for a new proposal on this year's ballot.

The 2010 increase is set to expire in mid-2013. Voters on Nov. 6 will decide whether to replace it with a permanent tax increase of the same size - one penny on the dollar.

As in 2010, education groups and other supporters of the current initiative proposal focus on benefits for schools and universities.

However, Gov. Jan Brewer and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry are among some backers of the 2010 increase who oppose this year's Proposition 204.

And unlike 2010 when supporters outspent opponents by roughly 25 to 1, the sides' war chests this time are relatively evenly matched.
