Austin man charged in alleged road rage incident

Austin Police have charged a man after they say he repeatedly pounded on a vehicle causing hail like damage during a road rage incident.

According to police, the driver of a white Kia Optima reported witnessing a collision that had occurred caused by a reckless driver in a blue Chrysler.

The driver of the Kia stopped at a red light at an intersection on Grove Blvd, when the driver of the Chrysler pulled up next to the Kia and got out of the vehicle. The driver attempted to open the door Kia's driver door and the back passenger's door which were locked.

The victim told police the man was yelling and cursing at him. He then when to the back of the car and began pounding on the trunk with his hand and elbows causing multiple dents similar to hail damage.

The man then returned to the Chrysler and drove away.

Police tracked down the Chrysler by the license plate number that the victim provided, to a residence located in the 1800 block of Grove Blvd.

Officers knocked on the door but no one answered. Once the car was being impounded, the Chrysler's owner came out the door. She told police that Eddie Thomas was the last person to drive the car and that he had been in a collision on Montopolis and in another incident that occurred on Grove and Riverside.

Eddie James Thomas Jr. has been charged with criminal mischief, a state jail felony.
