Mid-November-like weather on tap for Chicago

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Thursday afternoon has been sunny and mild with temperatures in the mid 70s, but a strong cold front will push through later this afternoon with a significant drop in temperatures.

Much colder weather arrives Friday and into the weekend with temperatures in the lower 50s with nights in mid 30s, bringing the impressive stretch of 11 consecutive months with above-normal temperatures to an end.

September 2012 finished 0.5 degree below normal in Chicago. This was the first month cooler than normal in Chicago since September of 2011.

This shows just how warm it has been here in Chicago over the last year.

The record for consecutive months above normal in Chicago still stands at a whopping 29. This streak started in September 1920 and ended in January of 1923.

Now mother nature has broken the seal.

A potent autumn cold front will usher in mid November like weather for the Chicago area through the weekend with high temperatures in the lower to middle 50s and over night lows in the mid 30s and even some upper 20s in the northwest suburbs. There is some good news to the upcoming chill in the air. Freezing temperatures will kill the pollen and improve what has been a brutal fall allergy season.

Chicago has not seen 4 consecutive days in the 50s since mid April. More proof of how warm it has been.

A weak El Nino is expected to develop through the winter months of December though February. This usually means a warmer than normal winter with slightly below normal precipitation for Chicago. Keep in mind this is an early forecast for the upcoming winter and a lot could change over the next couple of months.

No snow is in the forecast in Chicago any time soon, but it's a winter wonderland from Montana to the Dakota's and especially northern Minnesota. Some areas may receive up to 1 foot of snow before all is said and done this weekend.
