APD: Driver crashes, dies after fleeing traffic stop
The driver of a pickup was killed after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop early Tuesday morning and crashing into a tree on Garden Street, according to Austin Police.
At approximately 12:22 a.m. an officer observed a 2007 Nissan Frontier pickup truck driving with no headlights. As the officer initiated a stop the driver accelerated eastbound on Garden Street. Police say the vehicle ran several stop signs, lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.
The driver, identified as a Hispanic male, was pronounced dead at the scene. Four passengers were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
APD later discovered that the Nissan had been reported stolen.
