The Austin Police Department is continuing its investigation into two separate deadly auto-pedestrian accidents that took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
At around 4:20 a.m., a man in his 20s attempted to cross Highway 71 near FM 973 and was hit by an oncoming black pickup truck. The driver of the truck, and several witnesses to the accident, stopped and tried to help the man, but he was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to APD, the driver of the truck is not facing any charges at this time.
About fifteen minutes later, across town on I-35, another man ran out into oncoming traffic on the lower deck of the interstate at the split, and was struck by a vehicle. The man was pronounced dead on the scene. According to APD, the driver of the vehicle in this incident remained on the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.
24 people have died in auto-pedestrian accidents so far this year.
