A man, who stole a car and tried to run over Austin police officers, is in critical condition. Police say the officer fired off several shots because he was in fear for his life.
Police say they got involved after the suspect stole a car from a south congress car dealership yesterday.
Hours later, dozens of police cars lit up northbound frontage of I-35.
That area is near where an officer spotted the stolen SUV and the suspect, at the Country Garden Inn and Suites.
The officer chased the suspect as more police arrived. Then, the suspect jumped into the stolen SUV and headed for officers. Officers then fired off several rounds, critically injuring the suspect.
Long Motors employees say the suspect came in wanting to buy an SUV around 10:30 Tuesday morning. The salesman, who helped the suspect, says that man handed over a driver's license, and took a 2002 Nissan Xterra for a test drive. The salesman says he noticed too late that the ID was fake and became very concerned after a couple of hours.
The dealership also said police told them this suspect has stolen several cars along South Congress.
Police said yesterday the suspect had 16 outstanding warrants from several law enforcement agencies.
