In Austin, a group is rallying this evening in support of teachers in Chicago. They say the teachers are defending quality public education.
This rally also marks the one year anniversary of the Occupy Movement. Members of Occupy AISD and other groups are gathering here in solidarity with the teachers on the strike in Chicago.
This group has made their support for Chicago teachers known since last month, before the Chicago teachers union went on strike.
The Occupy AISD formed last year in an effort to defend public education which they say is a fight for the 99 percent and exactly what Chicago teachers are fighting for. But some organizations question the Chicago teachers strike saying that it's only hurting students.
"I thought from day one it was a travesty for public school teachers to strike. 350,000 kids in Chicago are not able to go to school because these teachers are greedy and are putting themselves and their contracts before the kids," said Peggy Venable of Americans for Prosperity Texas.
"We believe that this strike has opened up a national conversation about defending public education and unionized teachers in the country and that's definitely worth standing up for," said UT Communications Studies Professor Dana Cloud.
The rally at City Hall in support of Chicago teachers has just begun.
