For six years, plumber Mike Hughes has placed American flags by the damaged World Trade Center sphere in Battery Park, a half mile from Ground Zero. On each flag are the names of all 2,977 victims of 9/11.
One year he put up 3,000 flags, most years 300. This year he will only have time to put up 120. He could not get the city of New York to give him permission until 1230 p.m. Monday.
Mike, who normally has a week to prepare, got one day to set up his 9/11 memorial. He said someone told him Mayor Mike Bloomberg was in favor of winding down the memorials after the 10th anniversary in 2011.
Once he got permission, Mike scrambled to get the flags, steel rods and plastic flagpoles he kept in the basement of a store in the Morris Park section of the Bronx. Then he loaded everything into a rental van. Then it was off to Battery Park.
Once he was in Battery Park, old friends joined in. Con Ed employees will set up lights and construction workers volunteered at ground zero and other first responders with their families.
A spokeswoman for the city's Parks Department said it is "absolutely insane" to think the Mayor is opposed to memorials. The spokeswoman said the delay in issuing the permit was due to construction of new Oval Park but those plans changed. She did not say what changed.
