Cochise Co. detention officer quits after pot bust

Updated:

BISBEE, Ariz. (AP) - Police in the southern Arizona city of Bisbee say they've arrested a Cochise County jail detention officer after finding 260 pounds of marijuana in his pickup.

Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas says the officer resigned while being booked into the county jail on Wednesday.

Bisbee police spokesman Sgt. Taron Maddux said Friday that officers received a tip that a truck carrying marijuana may be coming through town.

They stopped 44-year-old Douglas resident Armando Morales' pickup Wednesday afternoon because it matched the description and was speeding.

A search found 227 pounds of marijuana under the hood, in the spare tire and in two other hiding spots. A second search Thursday located a hidden compartment holding 33 more pounds, and another is planned.

It wasn't clear if Morales has a lawyer.
