State health officials say a medical technician accused of infecting 30 patients with hepatitis C in New Hampshire briefly worked in Arizona.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health says David Kwiatkowski worked through a temporary staffing agency at two Phoenix-area hospitals.

Health officials are offering hepatitis C tests to anyone who received care in the cardiac catheterization labs at Maryvale Hospital from March 9, 2009 to June 27, 2009, or at the Arizona Heart Hospital from March 22, 2010 to April 2, 2010.

The tests are confidential and free to those patients.

"We are not aware of any patients that have come forward with hepatitis C," said Monica Bowman, CEO of Arizona Heart Hospital.

Police in New Hampshire believe the tech was injecting himself with painkillers meant for patients. Bowman said she didn't know of any problems with Kwiatkowski.

"We would immediately remove anybody from the hospital that we suspected were using inappropriate substances while providing patient care."

Kwiatkowski has said that he learned in May that he had hepatitis C. But prosecutors in New Hampshire say there's evidence that he had the liver-destroying disease since at least June 2010.

"We don't know if he was even infected with hepatitis C at the time. And we also don't know if he was practicing the unsafe needle practices at the time," said Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, Maricopa County Department of Public Health. "The majority of patients who are infected with hepatitis C never experience any symptoms and don't even know they are infected."
