Car wash benefits Silent Witness reward fund

Updated:
PHOENIX -

Corner car washes -- the fundraisers are so numerous at times, new residents have asked, what's up with all the car washes here?

Sometimes it's the high school cheer squad raising money for trips.

You will also sadly see people raising money to pay for funeral expenses sometimes for drowning victims, sometimes for crime victims.

What can a car wash do?  So much more than clean your car says Silent Witness Sgt. Darren Burch.

"I love them wonderful things for so many different reasons," he said.

Sadly, Pamela Coss knows those reasons.  She's organizing a car wash in Phoenix for July 21st.  It will be her second.

"The first one, we raised almost $3,000," she said.

$3,000 from a car wash in April.  The money goes into a Silent Witness reward fund.

Pamela hopes the money will entice someone to come forward with information about who murdered her son, Fabian Cano on January 8th of this year.

Since that night, she has managed to move forward without her only child.  He was 19-years-old.

"It's so hard Linda..because I know somebody knows something and this person needs to pay for what he did," said Pamela.

Pamela's son was at a birthday party on January 8th, less than a mile from home.  He was in the backyard, and no one, except the shooter really knows where the gunshots came from.

"There were shots fired..my son was standing in the backyard and a bullet went in a struck him in the head.  He did not survive," she said.

On the side of a wall that surrounds her west Phoenix home, Coss has put up a huge poster seeking justice for her son -- information about her son's murder.

"He was my only son..I poured my life into this little boy.  I knew everywhere he was.  I was the involved parent..I knew he was at this party," she said.

Coss buried her only child and though she felt her life was shattered, with love and support from family and friends, she's moved forward.

Sgt. Burch says events like a car wash help grieving families in untold ways.

"With the community who come in to get cars clean, they could go home and get their cars clean.  They're going because they care and that sense of community is huge when you're grieving," he said.

"Why somebody would shoot into the party.  I know it was not aimed for Fabian, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Pamela.

"You have so much pain and anger when you're lost a loved one through senseless violence that the idea that you can do something to raise and increase the reward where someone might come forward for the right reason anonymously..it just means so much to the families," said Burch.

"I had the girls, Fabian's friends..I had them at the corners and they were just brining in money.  It was so nice to see that.  Now I stop when I see a car wash," said Pamela.
